Graphics Engineer

🗺️ Full-Remote (with hybrid option in Los Angeles and Toronto)

đź’Ş Join Butter as one of the first members of our core engineering team. You’ll help build the next generation of creative software at the frontier of graphics, real-time rendering, and AI. 🔥 Butter already powers thousands of businesses, and you’ll play a key role in shaping our next phase of growth.

About Us

Hi, we’re Butter 👋 the Lego set for modern video and motion graphics.

We started with a simple question: Why does making videos still feel so painful? Most tools are either too complex or too limiting. And while AI makes some things faster, it also takes something away — control, originality, humanity.

Butter takes a different approach. It makes video creation fast, playful, and modular, like building with Legos. You can edit, remix, and evolve your work endlessly instead of being stuck with rigid templates or one-off AI outputs.

Today, Butter powers video creation for thousands of brands including Crocs, Netflix, and Pinterest, and artists like Blackpink and Future.

We’re a small team of builders, creatives, and engineers obsessed with craft and focused on shaping the next generation of tools to unlock more human creativity.

Why Work Here

đź’Ş Small, Profitable, and Freshly Funded
The most enduring products—Canva, Figma, Notion—took years to get right. We’ve taken the same path: stayed lean, grew through a passionate community, and tackled the hard technical problems others skipped.

Now we’ve raised $8M from top-tier investors with the capital and conviction to swing big. You’ll join as one of our first engineers, with real ownership and a direct hand in shaping the product and culture from the ground up.

❤️ Customer Love
Butter powers over 17,000+ brands, creators, and agencies and we've grown purely through word of mouth. People don’t just try Butter – they use it daily and tell people about it. You'll be joining as we enter our next stage of growth.
đź’¨ A Team That Ships
We care deeply about the product experience and release weekly. We bring decades of experience building at Figma, Headspace, Meta, and Cruise. Now we’re focused on one thing: redefining what creative software can be.
🙌 World-Class Mentors
We’re backed by founders and leaders from OpenAI, Anthropic, Shopify, Notion, Airtable, and The Browser Company. They’ve built the products we admire most and now they’re helping us build ours.

About the Role

As a Graphics Software Engineer, you'll help build the systems that make Butter's building block approach to video editing work. You'll also create visuals yourself, using code to make editable blocks that users can work with. You will help envision the possibilities of what developers can create like this, and then design and implement modular systems to give users power and intuitive control of those possibilities while keeping everything rendering quickly.

What You'll Do

• Build and evolve the interactive creative tools that make Butter special — intuitive video editing, advanced motion capabilities, and powerful visual effects.
• Build systems for component developers to tap into to get new motion or graphics capabilities
• Create new types of building blocks that developers can create, to multiply the possibilities of what users can make with Butter
• Build programmatic, editable visuals and animations with high-quality design and motion
• Own your work end-to-end, from concept to shipping to iteration.

Qualifications

• 3+ years of experience working with computer graphics
• Proficient in JavaScript, WebGL, and GLSL
• Confidence debugging, profiling, and optimizing graphics code
• Experience in writing unit and integration tests

Nice to Haves

• Experience using TypeScript
• Familiarity with code parsing and transpilation
• Experience with 3D content generation
• Experience with professional animation software

Want to Apply?

Butter is a well-funded, ambitious team of four rethinking what creative tools can be. We’re remote-first and distributed, with optional offices in Los Angeles and Toronto for those who want in-person time. If this sounds like your kind of challenge, we’d love to hear from you.
